5 Ways To Get Rid Of Unwanted Rubbish Before You Hire A Large Skip Bin

Nearly everybody likes to do the right thing and hates waste. We have the saying “one persons trash is another persons treasure” so BEFORE you hire a bin and throw out everything into land fill here’s what you can do to get into recycling.

  1. Facebook Marketplace , Gumtree & Ebay

Get onto Facebook marketplace and see if you can selling your stuff on this platform. It’s a great platform for selling practically anything (and I mean anything) especially locally. Things tend to sell quite quickly which is great because you don’t want it to drag on for too long. The trick is not to get too greedy and over price items you are selling. People are looking for a bargain here. It could be old bricks, tin sheets, dirt or prams. You name it – it sells. Or you can give it away for free.

There is also Gumtree but I have found this slightly slower for selling anything and there is a ton of annoying adverts. Gumtree is owned by Ebay.com.au and its an easy transition to sell your stuff for free on Gumtree or upgrade and expect to pay a small fee on Ebay.

  2. Donate

The next place to think about recycling is Vinnies or the Salvos – here you can donate a bunch of stuff that you don’t need anymore. Don’t just dump it though because the council views this as littering and you could cop a fine. The best thing to do is call them and ask if they’ll except certain items.

Don’t forget the donation bins that are dotted around town. In most cases they only accept clothing but it still gets recycled and its better than going into landfill.

  3. Garage Sales Still Work!

Organise a garage sale – with a neighbour. You can advertise your garage sale in the Geelong Advertiser or on gumtree. There are garage sale kits available. Here is some more useful garage sale information from the Geelong Council.

  4. Markets

Going to market doesn’t have to be scary or expensive. At the Belmont market is $20 to have a stall so you can sell your stuff easily. Check it out here. There are also regular car boot sales.

  5. Social Media

Use Facebook and instagram to give stuff away for free – you will be be surprised who forwards your items up for grabs on to their friends.

The whole point is to minimise wastage and recycle. This could mean you need a smaller skip binBin Sizes & Prices but that’s ok. Use the money you get from selling and recycling to pay for your skip bin hire then everyone wins.

Large Skip Bin Hire Tips

paul lambdon

Recently I made a video the should help you with ordering a skip bin and the do’s and don’ts of rubbish removal.

Ordering A Large Skip Bin

Hello I’m Paul, from Totally Wasted Bin Hire, and we’ve been operating for nearly 20 years in Geelong. My business consists of bins, from six cubic meter up to 20 cubic meter. Majority of my business would be light commercial, but I also do domestic, cleaning outs of garages.

We also do removal of concrete, hard concrete paths, driveways, dirt, clean spoil, renovating work, all different sized bins for different size renovations, demolition work, all the do’s and don’ts are on the website. Do’s and don’ts meaning I can’t take food waste, gas bottles, car tires, asbestos.

What To Do With Asbestos

If you think it is asbestos, you will need a specialized contractor to come in and remove it. If you’re trying to determine whether it’s asbestos or not, anything pre-1985 would normally, usually have asbestos in it, and you’ll normally find the asbestos in your old meter box, eave linings and around your bathrooms. If you turn it around, you’ll see if it’s got dimples on the back, it is asbestos.

Mattresses Need Breaking Down

We do take mattresses, but we do take them at a cost because of the work, the tips don’t want them, because they can’t compress them. Where the cost is, in the mattresses, is the labor to pull them apart, they’ve got to be completely stripped, back to the steel and have nothing else on the steel springs and if you’re willing to do that, you can strip them yourself and throw everything back into the bin at no charge, but if we have to do it, there’s a $40 cost, plus GST, per mattress.

Dumping Carpets

So couple things, carpet’s a big no-no, we don’t take full bins of carpet, well we can take it, but there’s a charge. If you’ve only got a couple of rooms, please let me know that you’ve only got a couple of rooms and cut them into small, one meter width lengths and roll them up, and you can put them in the bin. These extra costs for carpet, are charged by the tips themselves.

Council Fees & Permits For Skip Bins

If the bin goes outside your property line, as in if it has to go on the nature strip, or on the roadway, I do have to obtain a permit by law, whether it be Surf Coast or Geelong Councils. I don’t deal with the Surf Coast, if you’re down the coast, you’ll have to deal with them yourself. But if you live in Geelong, I can organize the permits, they tell us two days notice, so the more notice you can give me the better, there is a cost of that, they’re $50 for a permit.

Will A Skip Bin Fit In Your Driveway?

If you’re worried about your driveways, as long as your driveway has a minimum opening of 2.3 meters, I can get in to drop the bin off. Things to look out for are Telecom cables above and power cables, ’cause the bin, as you’ll probably see in this video, when I tip the bin off, it rolls off the back of the truck and it does get some height. I can adjust the height, and I can get into 99% of driveways and get the bins in, but just be wary of that.

How To Order A Large Skip Bin

The easiest method to order a bin, would be to hope on our website, all the bin prices are there for you to see, and also the tip fees. You’d have a rough idea of your weight, roughly what your weight is, so you’ll have a pretty generalized idea what the cost of your bin and tip fees would be together. If you’re not sure about the weight, of what you’re putting into the bin, by all means, just ask me, I have a pretty generalized idea what it’s going to weigh. If you tell me exactly what you’re putting in it, I’ll have an idea of what the cost will be.

Thanks for listening to me today, if you have any questions, please give me a call

Tatts Lotto Renovation

Shop Renovation Requires A Clean Out

We recently dropped a large skip in Belmont’s Kmart/Coles carpark as the management are about to renovate the Tatts Lotto office there.

Part of our regular work are shop renovations from Corio to Waurn Ponds. This particular bin hire was lucky as it was delivered, filled and taken to the tip before a wild storm hit.

The contents was a combination of metal and wood structures with most of the metal to be recycled by the tip. I think I’ve mentioned before that the rubbish tip has a huge magnet that picks up metals that can be melted down and reused.

The size of the bin was determined by the builder who was experienced enough to know he need 20 cubic metre meters and it was full to the brim. Size can be an issue if it’s for your home and normally we can accurately predict the perfect size for your needs after a quick chat.

5 Rubbish Removal Tips – Geelong Council

Recycling & Collection Tips

Geelong Council has various rules regarding rubbish removal and recycling. Here are 5 things you may not know.

1. Mattress Recycling

Geelong council charge a small fee if you wish to throw away your mattress. This fee covers pulling the mattress apart and recycling about 90% of the mattress parts. The foam and padding gets converted into carpet underlay, steel springs are melted down and the wood is converted into wood chips for particle board. The Geelong’s Council website states: The average mattress consists of two kilograms of wood, 12.5 kilograms of steel and 1.5 kilograms of foam. Who knew?

2. Hard Rubbish Collection

Geelong council is trialling collecting hard rubbish for free (once a year) as long as it doesn’t exceed 3 metres in length x 1 metre in height which is a tiny amount. If you have larger amounts then its best to book in one of our bins and we will cart the rubbish for you. Be careful though they do have restrictions on what they will pick up.

3. Weight – Watch Out!

Our trucks are weight restricted and the main culprits are cement, roofing tiles and carpets. If you wish to throw these out we’ll talk about this first so you’re clear on costs and bin size. Roofing tiles and cement may incur another recycling fee. Carpets are normally very heavy and may require a couple of bins.

4. Metal

Most metal items are recycled and when we drop a load off at the landfill a large magnet swoops over the rubbish and loads a huge bin that gets sent to the metal recyclers.

5. Waste In Geelong

Recycling in Geelong is being overhauled and reviewed by the council to best manage our local requirements. As part of the rubbish collection service around Geelong we are keen to find out how we can help recycle more into the future.

The pub is divided into a various areas including an extensive outdoor but uncover area.

It was an easy bin to deliver as they have a vacant block of land next to the area they are renovating and so they won’t have to pay council fees.

Norlane, 20 Cubic Metres

totally wasted norlane 320 large skip bin

A large skip bin (20 cubic metres) was delivered to a street in Norlane  on the roadside and incurred council fees. As mentioned previously these fees mainly cover insurance similar to public liability.

Norlane is an outer suburb of Geelong and great place for investing in property as the rents are reasonable and consistent. Our client decided to do major renovations that included the surrounding gardens. We discussed the project just to make sure there would be no heavy cement or soil or carpets that would make the skip too heavy to cart away legally. Most of the renovations weren’t structural and comprised mainly of plasterboard, building rubble and other building materials.

The client was hoping to increase the rent yield on the property and it’s not the first time we have helped a landlord improve their property. As it was coming up to Xmas we gave the landlord a “free” week” as the rubbish tip would be closed any way.

As mentioned on the front of our this website we close for the Xmas period and reopen Jan 3rd 2018.

If your looking to renovate over the Xmas period call Paul first to make sure you get the right size bin.

Skip Bin In Geelong City Centre

skip bin business

Many of our clients are businesses that are renovating offices or clinics in the centre of Geelong and need a small to medium skip bin to do the job. A proportion of the buildings in the Geelong CBD are quite old and need extending or refurbishing.

The Medical Health Group in Ryrie street, Geelong needed a 8 cubic metre bin for their interior upgrade. Their services include:

  • Myotherapy
  • Bowen Therapy
  • Podiatry
  • Naturopathy
  • Acupuncture
  • Chinese Medicine
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Clinical Neuropsychology
  • Remedial Massage
  • Chiropractic
  • Hypnotherapy
  • Injectibles
  • Cosmetic Tattooing

Keeping the interior up to date is important for clients so they feel comfortable and assured that the building reflects a superior service.

The bin was booked for two weeks and most of the rubbish was plaster, stud work and miscellaneous building rumble. The bin also fitted into the owners driveway so no council fees were charged.

7 Things You Need To Know

paul lambdon totally wasted

Here’s a list of answers to commonly asked questions when hiring a skip bin.

  1. You have to pay extra for hiring a bin that will be placed on council property. Depending on the council its about $50 to place a bin on the road or on a nature strip outside your home or office. These fees cover insurance.
  2. Be careful about filling your skip bin with heavy items such as carpet as there are weight restrictions at the tip and the delivery truck has a weight limited. Best to talk to Paul before you organise a skip bin.
  3. Mattress will cost an extra $25 dollars as Geelong council recycles them.
  4. It’s rare these days but be very careful with asbestos especially in some of the older dwellings. Stay right away from it and get experts to dispose of any asbestos you might find. We don’t pick up asbestos, tyres, oil/lard/liquid, paint, flammable liquid, gas bottles and food waste.
  5. Totally Wasted delivers around Geelong and the Bellarine Peninisula and parts of the Surf Coast. Any further out and extra fees will be incurred.
  6. It’s hard to judge the size of the bin you might need so it’s best to give Paul a call as he has seen so many sites he can help with your choice. It’s best to go a size up if you’re unsure as skip bins won’t be collected if they are over filled. The contents must not go over the side of the bin anywhere in the bin as this makes the skip bin unstable.
  7. Bins are hired for up to 7 days. If you need a bin for longer extra fees will be incurred.

If you are representing a company we have special rates for regular hires. If you are looking to hire a skip bin for your home ready for renovating or a big clean up then contact Paul (0409 861 039) to help you manage the whole process.
