We recently hired a bin to the landlord of a premises in South Geelong that used to be a training centre.
AGB training provided courses on Automotive, Business, Community Services, Civil and Hydraulic services design, Hospitality, Transport and Logistics, Spoken and Written English and were government funded.
AGB closed their business abruptly and the landlord was left with the task of clearing the site and preparing the property for the next tenant.
The rubbish removed was mainly interior stud work, plaster board and general rubbish. The skip bin was hired over a two week period and emptied twice.
Here’s a tip when hiring a bin for any business renovation. In most cases its not a good idea to hire a huge bin over a longer time but rather a medium size bin that gets emptied a few times. This keeps your options open and may cost you less in the long run.
If you are a business owner and a landlord and you do experience tenants suddenly closing their business here is some excellent advice.
You can drop off your general waste but you”l be paying fees such as $22.50 for a car boot and $58.50 per cubic metre for a trailer load. If you have any more rubbish than that it’s far more cost effective to hire one of our large skip bins.
Just a quick reminder you can drop off cardboard, polystyrene and other recyclable items at no cost.
At Drysdale there is a similar rubbish drop off station to North Geelong with similar prices and recycle opportunities. We also deliver large skip bins to Drysdale, Ocean Grove and Torquay should you have a larger amount rubbish to be removed. Paul (owner) can help you estimate the bin size you will need.
To get rid of excess garden waste and soil this will cost you fees at the resource recovery centres mention above and you will be charged by the amount. There is no free service around Geelong to remove organic waste except for your green garden/organic bin.
This could be bricks, cement, plaster board and wood and is right in our sweet spot. This is the type of rubbish we remove every week with our skip bin hire. Often it’s from new housing or commercial property construction. About once a month our bins are also hired for renovation such as roofing, old pathways and bricks. We need to know what type of building rubbish you have so we can make sure weight restrictions are adhered to.
Dangerous Rubbish
If you have chemicals, asbestos or any other toxic material deemed as dangerous or unhealthy you will need to contact a special rubbish removal company such as Corio Waste Management. We don’t deal with hazardous or toxic material.
Hopefully this list will quickly help you with rubbish removal in the Greater Geelong area. The best thing to do especially if you are unsure is to call Paul for a quick chat as he is an expert in rubbish removal around Geelong, the Bellarine Peninsula and the Surf Coast
Recently I made a video the should help you with ordering a skip bin and the do’s and don’ts of rubbish removal.
Ordering A Large Skip Bin
Hello I’m Paul, from Totally Wasted Bin Hire, and we’ve been operating for nearly 20 years in Geelong. My business consists of bins, from six cubic meter up to 20 cubic meter. Majority of my business would be light commercial, but I also do domestic, cleaning outs of garages.
We also do removal of concrete, hard concrete paths, driveways, dirt, clean spoil, renovating work, all different sized bins for different size renovations, demolition work, all the do’s and don’ts are on the website. Do’s and don’ts meaning I can’t take food waste, gas bottles, car tires, asbestos.
What To Do With Asbestos
If you think it is asbestos, you will need a specialized contractor to come in and remove it. If you’re trying to determine whether it’s asbestos or not, anything pre-1985 would normally, usually have asbestos in it, and you’ll normally find the asbestos in your old meter box, eave linings and around your bathrooms. If you turn it around, you’ll see if it’s got dimples on the back, it is asbestos.
Mattresses Need Breaking Down
We do take mattresses, but we do take them at a cost because of the work, the tips don’t want them, because they can’t compress them. Where the cost is, in the mattresses, is the labor to pull them apart, they’ve got to be completely stripped, back to the steel and have nothing else on the steel springs and if you’re willing to do that, you can strip them yourself and throw everything back into the bin at no charge, but if we have to do it, there’s a $40 cost, plus GST, per mattress.
Dumping Carpets
So couple things, carpet’s a big no-no, we don’t take full bins of carpet, well we can take it, but there’s a charge. If you’ve only got a couple of rooms, please let me know that you’ve only got a couple of rooms and cut them into small, one meter width lengths and roll them up, and you can put them in the bin. These extra costs for carpet, are charged by the tips themselves.
Council Fees & Permits For Skip Bins
If the bin goes outside your property line, as in if it has to go on the nature strip, or on the roadway, I do have to obtain a permit by law, whether it be Surf Coast or Geelong Councils. I don’t deal with the Surf Coast, if you’re down the coast, you’ll have to deal with them yourself. But if you live in Geelong, I can organize the permits, they tell us two days notice, so the more notice you can give me the better, there is a cost of that, they’re $50 for a permit.
Will A Skip Bin Fit In Your Driveway?
If you’re worried about your driveways, as long as your driveway has a minimum opening of 2.3 meters, I can get in to drop the bin off. Things to look out for are Telecom cables above and power cables, ’cause the bin, as you’ll probably see in this video, when I tip the bin off, it rolls off the back of the truck and it does get some height. I can adjust the height, and I can get into 99% of driveways and get the bins in, but just be wary of that.
How To Order A Large Skip Bin
The easiest method to order a bin, would be to hope on our website, all the bin prices are there for you to see, and also the tip fees. You’d have a rough idea of your weight, roughly what your weight is, so you’ll have a pretty generalized idea what the cost of your bin and tip fees would be together. If you’re not sure about the weight, of what you’re putting into the bin, by all means, just ask me, I have a pretty generalized idea what it’s going to weigh. If you tell me exactly what you’re putting in it, I’ll have an idea of what the cost will be.
Thanks for listening to me today, if you have any questions, please give me a call

and I look forward to hearing from you, thank you.
We recently dropped a large skip in Belmont’s Kmart/Coles carpark as the management are about to renovate the Tatts Lotto office there.
Part of our regular work are shop renovations from Corio to Waurn Ponds. This particular bin hire was lucky as it was delivered, filled and taken to the tip before a wild storm hit.
The contents was a combination of metal and wood structures with most of the metal to be recycled by the tip. I think I’ve mentioned before that the rubbish tip has a huge magnet that picks up metals that can be melted down and reused.
The size of the bin was determined by the builder who was experienced enough to know he need 20 cubic metre meters and it was full to the brim. Size can be an issue if it’s for your home and normally we can accurately predict the perfect size for your needs after a quick chat.
In Newtown (here in Geelong) there are plenty of older bungalows in need of renovating and we recently delivered a bin to contractors who we have helped previously. Peter Bruno and his crew from Makeover Masters where in charge and booked an 8 cubic metre bin for the owner of the property. The property was reduced to a shell as there was an enormous amount of renovating to be done.
The renovators booked the 8 cubic metre bin as it fitted into the front of the property so they didn’t have to pay council fees for placing the bin on the nature strip.
Villa Rosa Real Estate
I talked to the owner of the property David Villarosa from Villa Rosa Real Estate and he was really happy with the skip bin as his contractors were able to gut the property efficiently. The renovation was quite substantial and required more than one emptying. By the way talk to David if you’re looking to sell your home as he provides an individualistic premium service for select clients only. The only complaint he had was other residents using the bins for their rubbish. David decided to fence the front area off for security reasons and to stop others taking advantage of the skip bin hire.
This can be a real problem for people hiring bins and it so much easier if the bin is secured with fencing but unfortunately you can’t always do this. It’s best to be really organised with your skip bin hire and only book it for a few days , get the job done quickly and thwart the residence around you who don’t want to hire a skip bin themselves.
Talk to Paul about bin hire:

but also ask him some tips and tricks to securing your bin hire from unscrupulous neighbours. He can also advise you on skip bin size and council fees.
Newtown is a wealthy suburb of Geelong and has plenty of older properties that need regular clean ups. This is due to the larger gardens and well established trees as most of the rubbish we remove is green waste.
Many of these properties have rear access but no front driveway so often, as in the case, the 10 cubic metre bin had to parked on the road incurring council fees. The 10 cubic metre bin is perfect for a combination of garden waste and old house old items that are no longer needed and because its fairly low to the ground it’s easy for everyone in the house to reach and fill it up.
We recently had an order placed in similar circumstances where the client notified us they had a double mattress to throw out. Remember that mattresses incur an extra fee as they are taken apart at the rubbish tip by hand and recycled. This is a Geelong City Council initiative to help reduce the amount of landfill and reuse the metal and wooden parts of the mattress. We will let know what to with the mattress when you place an order for your skip bin.
If you do have garden waste remember also that our truck does have weight restrictions and we need to know if there is any concrete included. Most garden waste is no issue but just ask right at the start so your delivery and pick up is smooth and successful. We will of course ask you many questions as most of the restrictions or rules of delivery and pick up of your skip bin hire is regulated by the Geelong City Council.
Contact Paul (Ph: 0409 861 039) about the most appropriate size bin because you want to maximise your waste removal with the cost. You could get a slightly larger bin and share with a neighbour as we do go up to 20 cubic metres.
All over Geelong there are weather board properties ripe for renovation and often we deliver our most popular sized skip the 8 cubic metre. Most of these renovations require the inside of the house to be gutted and almost started from scratch. That means plaster board, old insulation, kitchen and bathroom tiles and even old electrical cable that needs carting away.
It turns out that weather board houses are much cheaper to renovate than brick houses and have been popular in Australia since the 1850s. They also don’t tend to crack like brick houses and can withstand ground movement and soil shrinkage better. Weatherboard houses don’t absorb the heat as much as brick houses but do heat up faster. Then you have wood rot (especially in window areas) and termites to worry about.
We see all the issues when picking up skip bins full of building rumble and talking to home owners and renovators.
Weatherboard houses do have an old world charm though and are still really popular.
Belmont Skip Bin Hire For Packaging
In Belmont this month we picked up a skip bin full of packaging. The new home owner bought a load of new furniture and appliances for their recently purchased home and it would have taken months to through out with the council garbage collections. They hired an 8 cubic metre skip bin and filled it with cardboard, wrapping, polystyrene and other plastic binding.
If you are renovating talk to Paul about removing the rubbish from your work that will accumulate over time. Often you may need to hire a bin twice over the course of your renovation and these could alter in size depending on which part of the property you are renovating. Our bin sizes range from 6 cubic metres to 20 cubic metres but we have to be concerned with weight restrictions as well. Concrete and carpet are really weighty and may cost you more to move. The most important thing to do is talk to Paul first so you don’t get any nasty surprises by getting charged more than you budgeted for. Extra weight will also mean more in council tip fees.
Deakin University at Waurn Ponds recently needed to renovate the Lakehouse Restaurant & Bar and repurpose the building. This meant taking the building back to an empty shell and removing many of the cafe elements in the building.
The Deakin University campus is set in a beautiful rural setting and is a world class facility. Its surrounded on three sides by lakes and rolling hills, truly a beautiful part of Geelong.
We were able to deliver a 6 cubic metre bin next to the loading area that saved on time and made it easy for the renovators to discard the interior rubbish.
The rubbish was a combination of wood, plasterboard and tiles.
If you are looking to renovate then talk to Paul about commercial bin hire. Ph: 0409 861 039
Totally Wasted provide the most cost effective large skip hire across Geelong, Torquay, Ocean Grove and over to Lara.
Skip Bin Hire At Geelong Conference Centre To Remove Garden Waste
We recently delivered two bins to the Geelong Conference Centre 20 Adams Ct, East Geelong VIC 3219. They needed bins to cart away garden waste that included bark, dead plants and pruning waste that is a never ending task due to their location in East Geelong.
The Geelong Conference Centre is run by the Salvation Army but has little to do with the charity as it’s a fully functioning commercial conference centre located in an amazing bush setting bordered by a golf course, the harbour and across the road from the Geelong Botanic Gardens. The conference centre can be book for residential training, conferences, church retreats, day meetings or weekend getaways within Geelong.
They hired two 8 cubic metre skip bins after their gardeners had cleaned garden waste and debris caused by recent stormy weather.
We also delivered a 6 cubic metre skip bin to a residential address in Highton as a renovator had recently been organising a clean up around a property there. This also included left overs from a fencing installation and general garden waste.
In both bookings the bins were placed on private property so didn’t incur council fees.
Be careful if you are going to include cement slabs or garden path tiles as cement can easily go over weight limits of the delivery truck this also includes massive amounts of soil and rocks. (Another reminder also not to include tyres in your rubbish as if you do you will be charged more as we get charged at the tip).
If you are unsure about the size of the bin you need give Paul Lambden a call and he will help you. It’s not always easy to judge the skip bin size you require especially with garden waste but Paul can help. Ph: 0409 861 039
